What are the requirements for a boat rental without a license?

For boat rentals without a license, you must be 18 years old or over, and the group must be no bigger than 5 or 6 people (depending on the size of the boat you hire). It doesn’t matter if you have no experience of piloting boats: all our boats are completely safe and designed for anyone to be able to use them. We’re sorry to say that pets are not allowed.

Before you take to the sea, we will give you some basic guidance on boat handling and safety to make sure you soon feel comfortable piloting the boat. We’ll also let you know about the routes that you can take without a license, starting from San Antonio harbour, where Open Boats is based.

To rent a boat in Ibiza with us, you’ll need to make your booking on our website, by making a 30% payment. You’ll pay the remaining 70% at the harbour on the day, just before picking up your boat. You can change the date at no cost, and if you can’t take the boat out on your chosen day because of bad weather or a rough sea, don’t worry we’ll find another day that suits you, and if that’s not possible, we’ll refund 100% of your money. That’s our promise.

To confirm the rental, you’ll need to leave a security deposit that we will return once you return the boat to the harbour. Remember that fuel is not included in the rental price and is paid for separately: but don’t worry, our boats without a license consume no more than 15-20 litres over a half-day trip.

What boats can I hire without a license in Ibiza?

At Open Boats, we offer two main options for boat rental without a license in San Antonio (Ibiza): the Bayliner Element (for a maximum of 5 people) and the Selva D470 (for a maximum of 6 people). The Bayliner Element is a deck boat and the Selva D470 is a semi-rigid boat, each with its own characteristics. They don’t require any type of qualification or license and can be used without a skipper.

What precautions should I take to prevent falls from the boat?

Sit in a stable position while piloting the boat, don’t run around the deck, and walk with your body leaning towards the centre of the boat. However, the risk of falls is minimal in boats without a license, given their low speed.

What is the minimum safe distance from other boats?

The minimum distance that should be kept from other boats, buoys, signage, etc., is 50 metres.

Can I travel out to the open sea?

No. This type of boat is not designed to travel on the open sea, or to cover long distances. Please ensure that you follow our recommendations, and the routes that we provide you.

What do I do if somebody falls into the water?

Shout “man overboard!”, stop the boat moving immediately and throw the person a life jacket, preferably tied to a rope. Never leave the boat to rescue somebody if nobody else would be left on board.
